Aging is inevitable – looking your age is not!

There are many factors that come into play when it comes to the aging process, aside from genes. Consistency with your skincare routine is important, but dismissing the additional contributing factors can actually negate your efforts.

Here are 5 ways to maintain a youthful glow:

1.  Limit your Time in the Sun

The sun has harmful UV rays that are responsible for accelerating the harsh signs of aging. With exposure, skin becomes more susceptible to wrinkles, age spots, hyperpigmentation and more. That is why it is imperative to apply an adequate amount of SPF daily, especially when you plan to be outside.

You should wear sunscreen everyday because harmful UV rays can also be emitted from artificial sources such as the lighting that is typically found in large stadiums and buildings. You can read more on this in our previous blog, Don’t Skimp on SPF: Your Skin Will Thank You!

2.  Stay Hydrated

Never underestimate the power of drinking water! To keep your body hydrated, drink 8-10 eight-ounce glasses of water a day. Staying hydrated from this inside out helps to maintain the skin’s elasticity, which is responsible for skin’s ability to stretch and bounce back. As we age elasticity starts to diminish, leading to a droopy appearance. Drinking plenty of water can also lower your chance of developing soft lines, scars, and wrinkles.

3.  Get your Beauty Sleep!

An inadequate amount of sleep can actually accelerate the aging process. We’ve all been there – too much on our to-do list that it keeps you up at night. But, when it comes to your skin’s overall health quality sleep is a necessity! Not getting enough sleep can lead to dull, dry and uneven skin. For those who suffer from chronic insomnia, inflammation and dark circles may be a frequent struggle.

When we sleep our bodies go through various stages to help restore our skin. During the first few hours the pituitary gland, which is the attachment in our brain responsible for controlling growth and development, produces somatotropin. This growth hormone contributes to the preservation of skin’s youthful appearance. The body will then start to produce a balance of hormones and proteins that are vital for protecting our skin from free radicals and promoting a healthy recovery.

4.  Frequent Skincare Services

5.  Curb your Alcohol and Caffeine Intake

You may not want to hear this, but curbing your alcohol and caffeine intake can really benefit your skin. A single glass of alcohol can contribute to increased inflammation throughout the bloodstream. Unfortunately this can lead to sagging skin over time, as collagen and elastin production decreases. Caffeine and alcohol are both commonly known for being diuretics. This means that they deplete hydration levels the more you consume them, robbing your body of key nutrients. With that being said, it may be more beneficial to use your starbucks fund towards your beauty regimen – your skin will thank you for it!

When it comes to your skin’s health, it pays to take a more holistic approach. Take a good hard look at your current habits, what are some things you can change moving forward?
