Laser hair removal is the most effective, permanent solution for getting rid of unwanted hair on virtually any area of the body – the most common being underarms, legs, bikini, arms and back.

Aside from removing unwanted hairs, laser hair removal is known to have other added benefits such as helping with issues like ingrown hairs, hyperpigmentation and acne. By getting rid of hair from the follicles, you are limiting the chance for the formation of ingrown hairs that can lead to hyperpigmentation if not treated. Some clients have even reported that their sessions have helped in reducing the appearance of acne. We call that a win win!

How Many Treatments are Recommended?

Eight to twelve treatment sessions are typically recommended to see the best, full results. These sessions should be scheduled anywhere between 4-6 weeks apart. Your provider will ultimately decide what is best for you based on your rate of hair growth, specific hair and skin color, as well as the area that is being treated. At Innovative MedSpa, we offer a variety of package options to get the most bang for your buck. These packages are based on the size of the area you are looking to treat.

Is Laser Hair Removal Actually Permanent?

YES! Laser hair removal was designed to be a permanent solution, with very minimal need for maintenance. Frequent waxing, plucking, or threading can lead to other skin complications down the line. And not only that, these techniques can be tedious and even more harsh on your wallet!

After finishing up to 12 sessions, most will only have to come in for a “touch up” every 6 months to a year – with some only needing to come in every couple years. It all depends on the area and thickness of the hair. Fluctuating hormones can also play a part.

What Areas Can I Treat?

We are able to treat virtually all areas of the body that contain hair follicles, with the exception of the eyebrows and scalp. We’ve treated areas such as the face, chest, abdomen, chin, hands, feet, arms, upper lip, areola and brazilian.

“I’ve even treated a patient’s nose hairs, as well as ears – mostly men. It’s definitely a sensitive area, so I am always sure to use caution in my technique when treating these areas,”  said Kelly Guisinger, Aesthetician at our Lincoln Park and River North locations.

When is the Ideal Time to Receive Laser Hair Removal?

Most laser treatments require you to avoid sun exposure to the area being treated. Due to lower UV rays, the best time to receive laser hair removal is during the colder months – fall, winter, and even early spring. Lighter skin tones are usually favored when it comes to most devices. However, at Innovative MedSpa we have made it our mission to provide the latest state of the art technologies. Our Wicker Park location is home to the Soprano ICE device by Alma. This particular device utilizes several of Alma’s patented technologies that allow us to be able to treat ALL skin types, including tanned skin and darker skin tones. It is the most complete and effective laser hair removal system known to date!

Does it Hurt?

You may experience some discomfort, however most of our devices include a “cooling” effect that counteracts this. The Vectus laser by Cynosure at our Lincoln Park location offers their Advanced Contact CoolingTM  ; while the Soprano ICE offers their ICETM Technology that is known for cooling the skin for longer periods of time. These help to minimize discomfort, as well as the risk of burns while also maintaining heat in the dermis layer where the follicles are being treated.

Can I Receive Treatment on my Bikini Area if I am Currently on my Period?

Yes, this is totally fine and not as rare as you may think. If you are receiving a bikini extended treatment or a Brazilian, we just kindly ask that you use a tampon for hygiene purposes. It is also worth mentioning that you may experience an increase in sensitivity in the area during this time.

Do I Need to Prepare for My Laser Hair Removal Appointment?

YES! If there is anything you take away from this blog post, it’s that you DO need to properly prepare for your appointment.

We kindly ask that you:

  • Shave the area within 24 hours of your appointment.
  • Refrain from waxing, bleaching, plucking, or threading at least 4 weeks prior to your session, as well as after.
  • Avoid using any scrubs, products containing glycolic acid, or retinoids to the treatment area at least 2 days before and after.
  • Avoid receiving Chemical Peels in the treatment area at least 2 weeks before and after.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure to the area at least 4 weeks prior.
  • Do not use any fake tanning products 3-4 weeks prior.
What Else Should I Avoid Post-Treatment?

It is highly recommended to avoid saunas, hot showers, as well as any vigorous activity that may cause you to sweat for at least 24 hours after. Your hair follicles will be in an extremely sensitive state following treatment so this may put you at risk for attracting bacteria that will aggravate your follicles which may lead to infection.
